Biographical Information

There are two prevailing theories concerning the ancestry of Samuel Jenner:  (1) that he was the son of Capt. Thomas Jenner III and his wife, Rebecca (Trerice) Jenner, and (2) that he was the son of Richard Jenner and his wife, Hannah (Barrett) Jenner, who later married Capt. John Coe.  The latter is almost certainly the lineage of this Samuel Jenner.

It is well established that a Samuel Jenner was born to Capt. Thomas Jenner III and his wife, Rebecca, on 3/21/1668-69 in Charlestown, MA.  Although the LDS, RootsWeb, Ancestry.com, and Genealogy.com all list the 1669 Samuel as the father of Samuel Jenner II, born in Woodbury, CT, it is extremely doubtful.  Samuel Jenner (senior) is listed in the History of Ancient Woodbury, as having settled there and being a landowner not later than 1682 according to the township's property registry.  This would make him a landowner at the age of 13 or younger, which is highly unlikely.  Samuel married Hannah Hinman around 1684 and they had their first child, Sarah Jenner, in 1685, so he would have been only 15 at his wedding and 17 when his daughter was born -- not unheard of, but still rare -- even for that time.

Furthermore, Samuel Jenner (the son of Hannah (Barrett) Jenner) is mentioned in his uncle, John Barrett's will, which was probated in 1666, so the Samuel Jenner born in 1669 could not possibly have been the son of Richard and Hannah, as some sources suggest.

It is equally well established that Richard Jenner and Hannah (Barrett) Jenner, had three sons, Richard II, John, and Samuel.  Some records suggest that Richard was an officer in the British Army, but official documentation of this has yet to be found.   All accounts state the he was killed in a "foreign adventure" in the mid-17th century.  It appears that Richard II and John were teens by this time, but Samuel was probably no older than five when his mother sailed to Newtown, New York to live with her brother, Samuel Barrett, in the early 1650's.  This would place Samuel's birth around 1650 and make him 25-30 years old at the time he settled in Woodbury, purchased land, married, and had his first child -- a much more likely scenario.

Samuel and Hannah's eldest daughter, Sarah, married Nathaniel Hurlbut on October 19, 1708.  Their great-grandson, Timothy, would later marry Ruth Hurlbut, but the relationship, if any, between Nathaniel and Ruth Hurlbut has yet to be determined.

Prudence Jenner married Moses Johnson on July 6, 1715.  Timothy and Ruth Jenner named one of their sons Moses Johnson Jenner, as did Samuel Jenner III.

Patience Jenner married Elnathan Strong.  The Strong family intermarried with the Coe, Hinman, and Hurlbut families several times between 1640 and 1800.

Nathan Jenner II died in infancy.  Abigail married Timothy Brownson on April 30, 1729.  The Brownsons were another prominent family of the colonial era.
