Biographical Information |
|||
| John "Jack" Pellman was born in the home of his Uncle Fred and Aunt Bea Funkhouser in Springfield, Missouri, but moved to San Diego, California as a toddler. He attended Florence Elementary School, Roosevelt Junior High School, and graduated from San Diego High School in 1939. Although he had helped his father in his work for the Graham and Paige automobile agency in San Diego during the depression, Jack's interest was not mechanical as a youth. Instead, he was a member of the Gens de Guerre at San Diego High School and obtained a congressional appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. However, having contracted tuberculosis as a child and exhibiting a heart murmur, he was denied admission to West Point due to physical infirmities. This did not, however, prevent him from being drafted into the U.S. Army a few months later. | |||
